The new HEMI hits the track in numbers. West coast Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger owners unite in an all day Road Course event to give those HEMIs a chance to stretch there legs.
All my senses came alive. The sound of the HEMI with open exhaust coming down the front straight at 130 MPH. The smell of the high octane and tire smoke as the cars exited the hot pits on to the front straight as the flagman gave his signal. So many 300s at a road course running as hard as they could. "Remeber to rotate your tires mid day"......some guys literally drove home on the cords. At least 3 cars ran out of gas as the drivers continued to drive lap after lap. Amazing how those HEMIs only get 6 MPG at WOT. Instructor Dr. Bob Reed could be seen at the top of turn 4 drifting around with tires squeeling, pushing the car as he must have back in his days of SCCA racing. WSIR was his home track. Each driver was intent on learning the track and eager to learn how to get every last second out of the track and their car. The day started off with a driver's meeting which covered driver's hand signals, flags, and general on track safety and etiquete followed by class room istruction. The classroom instruction by Dan English is basically a condensed version of Carroll Smith's Drive to Win, with the newbie in mind. Next year will be too long to wait to get the HEMIs out together again. Guys who spend the year chating on the 300C Forum will finally get together again see each other in person and get to know their cars, themselves, and each other better at what is known as "The fastest road in the West". |
